Simulation of multi-engineering systems typically requires many issues to be addressed through appropriate modelling and simulation techniques. Today, the open source Modelica language is more and more considered. On the other hand, many commercial software are available. As an example, Matlab is one of the most considered simulation platforms and is continuously improved through new toolboxes adequate for this scope. This paper, starting from the experience gained from the authors in simulating railroad systems, explains the basic opportunities offered from these two tools for the simulation of these electro-mechanical systems. It shows that Modelica language is able to guarantee the same level of accuracy, with much more flexibility and ease of use.

Abstract
Simulation of multi-engineering systems typically requires many issues to be addressed through appropriate modelling and simulation techniques. Today, the open source Modelica language is more and more considered. On the other hand, many commercial software are available. As an example, Matlab is one of the most considered simulation platforms and is continuously improved through new toolboxes adequate for this scope. This paper, starting from the experience gained from the authors in simulating railroad systems, explains the basic opportunities offered from these two tools for the simulation of these electro-mechanical systems. It shows that Modelica language is able to guarantee the same level of accuracy, with much more flexibility and ease of use.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
