Scott’s Ivanhoe is a milestone through which literary research developed the Historical Novel concept. Here, the conflict between foreign conquerors and the Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian and Celtic communities is reforged by drawing on the themes of a centuries-old debate on ‘national’ identity. In England, this issue was reopened by scholars, Protestant theologians, and politicians during the XVII and XVIII centuries, and reworked in the light of new literary and philosophical currents. Scott’s refined work, however, did not yield to any flamboyant imagery or succumb to rhetorical flourish, but carefully proposed a plain and alternative model of cultural memory. This model aimed at overcoming ethnic antagonisms and peculiar political stances that had never been completely appeased.
