References to the “paradoxical” character of the assimilated Jewish condition are ubiquitous in historical literature; of course, the word “paradoxical” does not designate a historical fact or process: its meaning is purely logical. This is why this paper focuses on contributing to a logical, as opposed to a historical, understanding of Jewish assimilation. To this end I modeled assimilation as an imitative process; this methodological choice made it possibile to apply to its understanding a number of theories expressly devised to account for paradoxes in imitative situations. The present paper focuses on the use of Harvey Sack’s concept of “imitation” as “boundary category around the term ‘Member’”.
