Abstract

Myth and Rituals in Athenian Lawcourts: Lycurgus’ Against Leocrates . Using the hermeneutical tools of Historical Anthropology, this article explores the connections between some arguments used by Lycurgus in Against Leocrates and some aspects of the religious life in Athens around 330 BC. Trying to strengthen his prosecution, the orator nods to the audien- ce hinting at rituals and myths related to aspects of his own administration about religious matters. Therefore, these ‘non legal arguments’ are as important as ‘legal arguments’, in this discourse in which pre-law and law blend into one other.
