Atherosclerosis develops when the arteries cannot repair themselves properly after injury by a variety of pro-atherogenic factors. defined by their indefinite capacity of renewal and differentiation, stem cells contribute to vascular tissue regeneration and remodeling during the development of atherosclerosis. Vascular stem cells form the vessel network during embryonic development, and in adult tissue they generate new vascular cells that replace damaged, aged or malfunctional ones. In atherosclerosis, there are reported abnormalities of vascular stem cells that contribute to pathological alterations, including intimal hyperplasia and impairment of fibrous cap. Atherosclerosis risk factors (e.g. hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, inflammation, diabetics, smoking, obesity, aging, etc.) have profound impact on the potency of vascular stem cells for survival, growth and differentiation. Different clinical trials have been revealing the potential benefit of stem cell therapy for treatment of pationts with atherosclerosis-associated heart disease.
