The essay develops from some critical reflections offered by the volume Antonio Magliabechi nell’Europa dei saperi (Pisa, 2017), which had the merit of placing the figure of the Florentine scholar in a new and appropriately broader perspective. It was indeed time to rank Magliabechi among the exemplary cases of cosmopolitan 'savant', able to bring people and ideas together, to allow the circulation of texts and to campaign intellectual initiatives without ever leaving his hometown. Magliabechi's house, his extraordinary book collection (which, after its owner’s death, became the core of the Biblioteca Palatina Medicea), in addition to the possibility of obtaining bibliographic information from him, always up to date and extensive, have been attracting scholars to Florence from all over Europe for many years. Moreover, the outreach of magliabechian scholarship embraced some crucial philosophical-scientific and historical-political themes, which were sometimes subject of controversy of as early 17th century, and which were able to condition some particularly heated debates in the Enlightenment period: namely, religious tolerance, the reception of Newtonianism, and historical periodization.
Il contributo sviluppa alcuni spunti di riflessione offerti dal volume Antonio Magliabechi nell’Europa dei saperi (Pisa, 2017), che ha avuto il merito di collocare la figura del letterato fiorentino in una prospettiva nuova e opportunamente più ampia, presentandolo come caso esemplare, ed estremo, di ‘savant’ cosmopolita, capace di fare incontrare persone e idee, di mettere in circolazione testi e di muovere iniziative pur senza allontanarsi mai dalla sua città natale. La casa di Magliabechi, la sua straordinaria collezione libraria (passata, dopo la morte del proprietario, a costituire il nucleo centrale della Biblioteca Palatina medicea) e la possibilità di ottenere da lui informazioni bibliografiche sempre aggiornate e amplissime attirarono infatti a Firenze, per lunghi anni, gli eruditi provenienti da tutta Europa. Lo spessore dell’erudizione magliabechiana, inoltre, abbracciò temi filosofico-scientifici e storico-politici assolutamente cruciali, oggetto anche di polemica già del secolo XVII e capaci di condizionare alcuni dibattiti particolarmente accesi in epoca illuministica: la tolleranza religiosa, la ricezione del newtonianismo, la periodizzazione storica.
