Among the activities that have most characterized the KGB there are two areas that, more than any other, have fueled the fame of one of the most feared secret service in history. On the one hand, foreign espionage, indispensable both for maintaining the security of the Soviet Union and for expanding the political and cultural influence of the socialist camp. In this field were achieved remarkable results and formed legendary characters, such as Jurij Drozdov, who participated both in the exchange of the Soviet spy Rudolf Abel 'in Berlin in 1962 in exchange for the American pilot shot down in the Urals, and for the operations in Afghanistan in 1979.Another area to which the KGB paid specific attention was the repression-prevention of dissent. Actually this was a constant after 1917, but on the initiative of Andropov a special directorate was established in charge of "prophylaxis", so that recourse to criminal measures was avoided as far as possible by discouraging all forms of dissent ab initio.
