Following the studies of the classical reception of Greek-Latin authors in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the main historiographical guidelines and the historian’s duty to be are presented, starting from the strong influence they had on De historia conscribenda of Luciano de Samosata and the oratory treatises of Cicero and Quintilian, on the main humanists of the 15th and 16th centuries such as Coluccio Salutati, Guarino Veronese, Lorenzo Valla, Bartolomeo Facio, among others. The works of these humanists will allow historical writing to progressively abandon the medieval chronicle and lay the foundations of history as a discipline according to the methodological and scientific guidelines of the Modern Age.
