This paper shows the results of the tests carried out on this New Growing Medium (NGM), made of PU polymer aggregated peat, at Fattoria Autonoma Tabacchi of Città di Castello (Perugia, Italy). A key-point, to make this TFS-TP process practically feasible, was the development of an innovative transplanter. In fact, root binding among adjacent plugs was found to be a major problem and this required to design ex-novo the conveying system of the transplanter. A mechanical prototype was developed, in which the plug units are set manually by an operator on the conveyor. The plastic films underneath are recovered for reuse. However, an electronic, fully automatic, transplanter is under development. The proposed TFS-TP system and transplanting process has an economic advantage over the traditional one .
