Abstract

Since the Islamic Revolution, Iranian Imamite Shiism, distinguished for its traditional quietism towards political life, turned into a proper militant ideology . Even if it is undoubtedly true that Ayatollah Ruḥollāh Khomeynī’s political discourse helped the transition from the clerics’ disengagement from politics to a major involvement in it, the development of Khomeinist rhetoric into the framework of political Shiism was not entirely Iranian.
