This paper focuses on the importance of some data included in the Fathers of the Church’s works and in Egyptian papyrus in order to have a better framework of the Roman private banking in the central years of the 4th century A.D. The outcomes are then considered with reference to the general view deriving from legal and literary sources. So, we may improve our knowledge about some aspects of this ‘dark’ period of banking in the Roman world of the Late Antiquity.
