This chapter is a high-level introduction to metamaterials, metasurfaces and frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs). A brief description of the basic theoretical aspects and possible applications of these composite structures is presented. The focus is posed on some important concepts which allowed the design of innovative devices. The number of formulas covered in this chapter has been intentionally limited to only the really necessary. Given the extent of the subject, the presented material does not aim to be an exhaustive review of metamaterials; however, the chapter may serve as a useful starting point for educational purposes, for both beginners and engineers who need to approach this complex and pervasive research topic.
