The article analyses the major productions of the non-professional phase of the group La Carátula (from late 1948 to the summer of 1950) and aims to assess that experience and its repertory. In the eight performances of the group in that period, and according to the manner several “teatro de cámara” companies proceeded, there is a marked preference for the translation or adaptation of plays by foreign dramatists, some of which were amongst the most relevant playwrights at that time. The amateur phase of the company culminated in the premiere, in March 1950, of The House of Bernarda Alba, which brought about quite a few difficulties before the event and had some repercussions in the days following.
