Why does Kant claim the need to overcome the state? Does he fully embody the notion of modern statehood in his political mind? Has Kantian political philosophy ever been released from its own institutional ground? Analyzing both the tradition of Kantian institutionalism and substantive problems of modern statehood, the paper aims to bypass critiques and skepticism about Kant's cosmopolitanism as well as defend the vitality of the supranational approach to the philosophy of international relations. In particular, the paper focuses on Kant's political institutionalism assuming that the result of his cosmopolitan assumptions is a theory of a world federation. Accordingly, institutionalism remains as cardinal to legitimize a supranational order which not only differs from but also challenges the monism of modern politics, i.e. the political form which characterized both nation-states and multinational centralized political bodies like empires.

Abstract
Accordingly, institutionalism remains as cardinal to legitimize a supranational order which not only differs from but also challenges the monism of modern politics, i.e. the political form which characterized both nation-states and multinational centralized political bodies like empires.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
