Funzioni simboliche del tempo nelle Vespe

Symbolic functions of time in Wasps · This paper aims at shedding light on the symbolic meaning of time in Aristophanes’ Wasps. A preliminary distinction between quantitative and quali- tative aspects of time helps understand the semantics of subjecive time, which can be defined, in the chronotope of ancient Attic comedy, as the distance that separates the rise of desire from its fulfill- ment. Within this framework, it is possible to show how time in Aristophanes is often a metaphor for other assets (wealth, enjoyment, power), and conveys the urge of the comic self to ultimately transcend the limits of human existence. A proper evaluation of symbolic and functional equivalents of time in Wasps allows to understand the dramatic action as the triumphal progress of qualitative temporality, resulting in a positional transformation of the protagonist, who, after being repeatedly rebuπed in his endeavours, is finally headed toward a somewhat metachronical contentment. The analysis of subjective time thus helps highlight other crucial, although less conspicuous features of this play: the impossibility to subsume Aristophanes’ heroism within the horizon of Bakhtin’s grotesque; the consistency of the peculiarly tripartite structure of Wasps; the Dionysian (i.e. per- formative and metatheatrical) essence of the comic hero, which, in the ending of Wasps, comes most memorably to the fore.

Questo contributo si propone di far luce sul significato simbolico del tempo nelle Vespe di Aristofane. Una distinzione preliminare tra aspetti quantitativi e qualitativi del tempo aiuta a comprendere la semantica del tempo soggettivo, che nel cronotopo della commedia attica antica si può definire come la distanza che separa l’insorgere del desiderio dal momento della sua realizzazio- ne. In questi termini, è possibile mostrare come in Aristofane il tempo funga spesso da equivalente traslato di altri beni (ricchezza, godimento, potere), ed esprima in sintesi l’aspirazione profonda dell’io comico a sottrarsi alla limitatezza dell’esperienza umana. Valorizzando le equivalenze simboli- che e funzionali del tempo nel testo delle Vespe, risulta possibile comprendere lo sviluppo dell’azione drammatica come una progressiva accentuazione degli aspetti qualitativi del tempo, accentuazione che si traduce in un percorso del protagonista verso una sorta di realizzazione metacronica. A partire da questo parametro si possono cogliere altresì aspetti poco perspicui, benché fondamentali, del si- gnificato del dramma: la non conformità dell’eroismo aristofaneo rispetto all’orizzonte del grottesco bachtiniano; il carattere unitario della singolare struttura tripartita delle Vespe; il rapporto sostanziale che lega l’eroe comico alla dimensione dionisiaca (performativa e metateatrale), e che nel finale delle Vespe emerge nel modo più memorabile.
