Abstract

The authors reflect on the effectiveness of the right to equal pay between men and women in Italy and they argue that concrete and effective equality in the workplace is still far from being attained. Following the legal reasoning of a series of recent decisions of the European Committee of Social Rights, the article suggests that equal pay should be fostered both through effective enforcement of individual rights and social policies. According to the Authors, pay transparency, use of statistics and gender mainstreaming may prove to be useful tools for the legislator to tackle the persistent gender pay gap.
