The greatest massacre of civilians by the Nazis on the Western front took place between September 29th and October 5th, 1944, in that area bounded by Setta valley to the east, Reno valley to the west, dominated by Monte Sole to the north and Monte Salvaro to the south – in the province of Bologna. This essay aims, on the one hand, to reconstruct the phases and seasons of the public memory of these events and, on the other, to reveal the changing identities of those who, over the decades, have felt the duty, or the need, to remember.
