Abstract

Migrants from different territories have contributed to the economy and to the genesis itself of the social structure of the United States and , more generally, of the North American continent. In this research the most significant period was studied (great migration at the end of 19th century till the 30's of the 20th century) : emigration was increasing in numbers and became more diversified, transforming the place of destination in the new national and residential one . Meanwhile processes of integration started , not devoid of clashes and conflicts, but also of cultural syncretism and will of Italians to be part of the host country's society ( this occurred later when immigrants decided not to return to Italy). The different types of immigrants have allowed to identify ethnical complexity of the social economic structure. The same ethnicity that today ,indeed, characterizes an inverse process of social division and fragmentation in the new global system, no longer industrial capitalist, transforming those qualitative ethnic characteristics into elements of conflict. The attention was focused on the ethnic community from Lucca.
