Starting from a research project undertaken in three Italian prisons, the essay is a sociological analysis on the multiethnic prison context. The study exposes the ways in which prison administration tries to manage the basic needs and necessities proper to a multicultural and multi-religious prison population, highlighting deficiencies and concerns. Specific paragraphs examine the prison de-radicalization strategies: due to the mix of the general predominance of security measures and the increasingly concerned about jihadist’s radicalization, many of the prevention techniques used by the administration risk not to adhere to prisoners’ fundamental rights, and consequently to compromise religious freedom.

Abstract
Starting from a research project undertaken in three Italian prisons, the essay is a sociological analysis on the multiethnic prison context. The study exposes the ways in which prison administration tries to manage the basic needs and necessities proper to a multicultural and multi-religious prison population, highlighting deficiencies and concerns. Specific paragraphs examine the prison de-radicalization strategies: due to the mix of the general predominance of security measures and the increasingly concerned about jihadist’s radicalization, many of the prevention techniques used by the administration risk not to adhere to prisoners’ fundamental rights, and consequently to compromise religious freedom.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
