DA VECCHIE A NUOVE EDIZIONI… E VICEVERSA? IN MARGINE A UN RECENTE LIBRO SULLE "TRECENTO NOVELLE" DI FRANCO SACCHETTI

Reviewing a recent book by Davide Cappi and Paolo Pellegrini on Sacchetti’s novelle, this essay assesses its methodology and its reconstruction of the text’s large body of textual witnesses. The latter suggests that no real progress has been made since pioneering studies by Michele Barbi and Franca Ageno, but it is worth noting that the broad recensio offered in the book seems to suggest otherwise. In the context of a much more articulate, in-depth analysis of the textual transmission, however, there is little doubt that new light can now be shed on the many obscure passages of the Trecento Novelle, that the authors insist citing as Il Trecentonovelle against most early documents (and Vincenzio Borghini’s own usage). Of the many examples available, this essay examines some loci in which – due to clear errors in Borghini’s text – the original reading can only be reconstructed by the “alternative” tradition, the one that does not exist, according to the book’s authors.

ll presente saggio prende in esame il recente libro di Davide Cappi e Paolo Pellegrini sul novelliere di Franco Sacchetti discutendone tanto la metodologia quanto gli argomenti principali. Rispetto alla problematica recensio dell’ampio testimoniale, il volume non offre soluzioni nuove né migliori alle ben note cruces filologiche e interpretative del novelliere, ostinandosi a negare anche acquisizioni di palmare evidenza documentaria, quali la nuova titolazione (dominante anche negli autografi di Vincenzio Borghini e nella tradizione privilegiata dagli autori), l’importanza della tradizione non borghiniana e la datazione del piú importante esponente di quest’ultima, il codice oxoniense G. In tal modo, il lavoro sembra rappresentare – piú che prolegomena a una nuova edizione – un’apologia a posteriori di edizioni ormai invecchiate in quanto appiattite su un unico testimone e non basate (come appare necessario dallo stesso libro in questione) su un’indagine estesa della tradizione, con le relative problematiche che, ampiamente documentate dalla bibliografia pregressa, erano già alla base del lungo lavoro sul testo critico del 2014.
