Islam, in its relation between state and politics, has often been used by Arab regimes to strengthen the sense of national identity or as a tool of self-legitimation to gain the support of the people. Morocco is not an exception and it reached this purpose through the creation of Councils directed not only to control religion inside the Kingdom, but also in Europe within its community of expatriates. This article is specifically devoted to the exams of the “Moroccan Council ʿUlamāʾ for Europe” and aims to shed light on this little-known organization, one of the regime’s keystones to reaffirm its power on Moroccan citizens abroad, spreading the Mālikī school, and preventing Islamic radicalism as well.

Abstract
Islam, in its relation between state and politics, has often been used by Arab regimes to strengthen the sense of national identity or as a tool of self-legitimation to gain the support of the people. Morocco is not an exception and it reached this purpose through the creation of Councils directed not only to control religion inside the Kingdom, but also in Europe within its community of expatriates. This article is specifically devoted to the exams of the “Moroccan Council ʿUlamāʾ for Europe” and aims to shed light on this little-known organization, one of the regime’s keystones to reaffirm its power on Moroccan citizens abroad, spreading the Mālikī school, and preventing Islamic radicalism as well.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
