The article aims at reassessing Irma Brandeis’ scholarship, which has been too often overlooked because of an excessive interest towards her love affair with Montale and her role as a ‘muse’ in the poet’s oeuvre. Brandeis’ career and criticism deserve, instead, a positive revaluation, for they are thought-provoking in many respects, both per se and in the context of XX century scholarship. First of all, I sketch her biography and provide the key elements of her academic life; then I focus on her scientific contribution around Montale and Dante, and I highlight her main interests and readings. Brandeis’ essays display her sensibility towards different critical approaches, as well as her being well-informed and ready to take part in the main scientific debates of her time; they provide noteworthy outcomes, especially with respect to Dante’s figurative language.

Abstract
The article aims at reassessing Irma Brandeis’ scholarship, which has been too often overlooked because of an excessive interest towards her love affair with Montale and her role as a ‘muse’ in the poet’s oeuvre. Brandeis’ career and criticism deserve, instead, a positive revaluation, for they are thought-provoking in many respects, both per se and in the context of XX century scholarship. First of all, I sketch her biography and provide the key elements of her academic life; then I focus on her scientific contribution around Montale and Dante, and I highlight her main interests and readings. Brandeis’ essays display her sensibility towards different critical approaches, as well as her being well-informed and ready to take part in the main scientific debates of her time; they provide noteworthy outcomes, especially with respect to Dante’s figurative language.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
