Abstract

The end of the apartheid in the early 1990's brought increased economic openness and improved trade relations with the rest of the world. Trade sanctions were removed and the new government planned a tariff reorganization process and the liberalization of the trade regime consisted of replacing quantitative restrictions with ad-valorem tariff lines, a simplification of the tariff regime, together with a gradual reduction in tariff rates and an export subsidization scheme. This research examined the impact of trade liberalization on wages and , in particular, the relationship between tariff and wages in South Africa's manufacturing sector ( most affected by the transition to the post-industrial system). Trade liberalization is positively related to wages. This may be due to the fact that industries that liberalize may shed low wage workers or that low productivity firms exit ,increasing the average wage.
