The category of person, which for a long time has been central for the philosophical and the juridical debate, is nowadays often put in question, as it is commonly thought to be unsuitable as a means for correctly understanding our ethical and social reality. After giving a general outline of the current debate on this issue, in this article I first consider Levinas’ criticism of the category of person and his alternative proposal, i.e., the category of human, for then illustrating how, through the unique combination of universal and concrete elements that it offers in Levinas’ account of it, this notion can give an important contribution to to the contemporary debate.

Abstract
The category of person, which for a long time has been central for the philosophical and the juridical debate, is nowadays often put in question, as it is commonly thought to be unsuitable as a means for correctly understanding our ethical and social reality. After giving a general outline of the current debate on this issue, in this article I first consider Levinas’ criticism of the category of person and his alternative proposal, i.e., the category of human, for then illustrating how, through the unique combination of universal and concrete elements that it offers in Levinas’ account of it, this notion can give an important contribution to to the contemporary debate.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
