In 2012, a parallelepiped bone die was found in a secondary context at the church of Santa Euphrasia in Pisa. Interestingly, the die is characterized by smooth bases and the occurrence of the numbers between 3 and 6 on the long faces. Moreover, the shape and the arrangement of the numbers have strong similarities with Celtic dice of the Hellenistic period from Central Europe. Although the lack of good contextual data does not allow for a better investigation of the reasons for its presence in the city, the die itself testifies to Pisa’s great openness to cultural contacts during Hellenistic times.

Abstract
In 2012, a parallelepiped bone die was found in a secondary context at the church of Santa Euphrasia in Pisa. Interestingly, the die is characterized by smooth bases and the occurrence of the numbers between 3 and 6 on the long faces. Moreover, the shape and the arrangement of the numbers have strong similarities with Celtic dice of the Hellenistic period from Central Europe. Although the lack of good contextual data does not allow for a better investigation of the reasons for its presence in the city, the die itself testifies to Pisa’s great openness to cultural contacts during Hellenistic times.File in questo prodotto:
