The aim of this paper is to reflect on the dialogue between two cultures: the federalism of Altiero Spinelli and the communist Europeanism of Giorgio Amendola. The main source of the work is represented by the diaries of the federalist leader, of which a critical reading is given. What emerges is the interconnecti on of two biographies which, without flattening the diversity of positions, is characterized by an intense dialectic that has deeply marked the last thirty years of the history of the Italian Communist Party.
