The essay examines the theses about neo-liberal modernisation presented by Ambrogio Santambrogio in his latest book Ecologia sociale. La società dopo la pandemia. In the framework of a theory of society as a totality, the diagnosis of time (Zeitgeist) is formulated on two complementary as-pects: a) the transition to the new principle of social organisation, characterised by “modernisation without development”, with the analysis of its structural “solidities” and its pathological effects, such as the environmental risks produced by mankind, the precariousness of work and existence, the frenetic acceleration of life times and the dependency that undermines the capacity for autonomy of the new generations; b) the new neo-liberal ideology of “liquidity” that guarantees the latency of systemic crises and the conflict potential of such a destructive and pathological socio-economic model, primarily by masking public issues in problems of individual adaptation. Finally, the essay examines a series of possible solutions to the crises of symbolic and material reproduction that the author proposes as "viable utopias" to recover "human development" in the process of modernisation.
