This paper seeks to study the strategies implemented by two bishops of the second half of the 13th century, Ranieri de Volterra and Guglielmino —two brothers of the Ubertini family—, to promote the ecclesiastical career of their nephew, first a parish priest at San Gimignano, and then canon of the cathedral of Arezzo and, finally, bishop of Volterra. In the wake of studies on ecclesiastical nepotism, the goal of this investigation is to study the family dynamics through which the Ubertinis managed two important dioceses in Tuscany in Dante’s time.
