In this paper we examine the use of some deictic strategies in Evgenij Zamijatin’s novel “We” and their translation into Italian. Our study is based on three Italian translations. One of the main motifs of the novel is the motif of the boundary. We show how this motif is expressed by deictic language elements. The main focus is on spatial deictics: Russian spatial proximity marker tut and distance marker tam. The Russian tut turns out to be difficult to translate because of its synthetic meaning and some special pragmatic functions. We analyze compensatory strategies through examples of translations. The Russian tam has different translations solution in Italian, which are determined by the translator’s interpretation of the deictic units.
