The glass medallion in the shape of a lion’s head mask was found in 2008 during the excavations carried out by the Istituto Papirologico “G. Vitelli” (University of Florence) inside the church D2, in the southern area of Antinoupolis (Egypt). The circular medallion (diam. 3.5 cm) was possibly applied on the wall of a jug, probably at the lower end of a handle it once adorned. This lion’s head mask finds very close parallels in objects excavated in Egypt, particularly in Alexandria. The lion’s head has been stamped and then applied while still hot. The glass medallion is dated by the find context to the 4th century AD.

Abstract

The glass medallion in the shape of a lion’s head mask was found in 2008 during the excavations carried out by the Istituto Papirologico “G.
