This paper examines the role of the biblical and spiritual tradition in Maria Stepanova's poetry and in her prose, paying particular attention to the thematic associations between the first and the recent works. Beginning with the 2001 ballad collections, biblical reference appears as a term of comparison to define an identity that interconnects the Old Testament figures and the hypostasis of the author, often identifying herself with the female figures of her family. This intertextual reference becomes even more important in the 2017 novel “Pamyati pamyati” (In Memory of Memory), where not only the Old Testament component but also elements of Jewish spiritual culture, especially the culture of Eastern Judaism, are fundamental to the author's mnestic reconstruction. They also create a concrete link to the polyphonic presence of the author’s ancestors. Finally, an important reference to the New Testament appears in the collection 2020 “Staryy mir. Pochinka zhizni” (Old World. Fixing Life), where a renewed affirmation of the corporality of the poetic act is accompanied by the figure of Lazarus.
