Henriette Davidson Avram: the Value of Exchange · From the mid- 1960s and for nearly three decades, Henriette Davidson Avram played a key role in the evolution of research all over the world. Defined as «the Henry Ford of library automation» and «the Melvil Dewey of the 20th century», it is to her that scholars owe the opportunity to know and have easier access to materials held in the most important libraries ever. The launch of the marc format, or MAchine-Readable Cataloguing, and, with it, the possibility to produce, classify and share bibliographic information, the inception of the retrospective conversion of catalogues, the emphasis placed on the authority control process are proof of Henriette Avram’s care for the quality and swiftness of the services provided by libraries to users and scholars, beyond any geographical or linguistic boundary
