The article analyzes Anne-Louis Girodet’s poem « Le Peintre » which is a true poetic self-portrait of the painter. It is partly real and partly imaginary autobiography at te centre of which is the journey as a crucial formative experience. In this ideal autobiography, the protagonist, who is the painter’s alter ego, not only travels to Italy, but also to Switzerland, Greece, Scotland and the Americas. This varied path is emblematic of an openness to different models and ideas, and this it perfectly reflects the restless personality of Girodet.
