This article deals with the imprisonment of Dom Duarte de Bragança, a brother of John IV King of Portugal, in the Castle of Milan: this happened in the years of the so-called Portuguese Restoration and of the negotiations leading to the peace of Westphalia (1648). Thanks to the records referring to the trial proceedings he was submitted to, the first aim is to investigate the status and the way of life of an eminent prisoner in the iron century. A traitor of his sovereign according to his enemies, a free prince “sold out” for political reasons in the view of his friends, Dom Duarte was at the centre of a fascinating episode in the broader context of the dynastic and military confrontation involving the Iberian monarchies in the seventeenth century.
