Abstract

Recent findings of a three-year survey project in the countryside SW of İznik (ancient Nicaea) are presented, focusing in particular on the materials found in the modern municipality of Göllüce. The evidence is compared to data collected from the Life of St. Andrew (Laudatio and Narratio), a source that is thought to contain some trustworthy information. An interesting series of stamped tiles that mention a Kerameus of St. Theodoros is discussed and attributed to the “monastery of the potters”, which is mentioned in a passage of the correspondence of Theodoros Studita.
