A brief survey of the main features and moments of inscriptional poetry from Greek Antiquity to the Latin inscriptions of modern society. Focusing especially on the relations and mutual influences between poems in stone and literary poetry, the article deals with the problem of literariness of verse inscriptions, the semantic role of layout, the performance, the tensions between anonymity and authorial intentions.
