According to M.Sordi and F.Millar, Dio's words on the eruption of AD 202 prove that in that year he was already at work with his Roman History. As a matter of fact, the use of "exélampse" and "egéneto" for the eruption, and of the present tense "diago" for his stay at Capua, demonstrates that in AD 202 his work had not yet started. Moreover, according to Dio' s "usus scribendi", he tells the eruption not as an eye-witness. Therefore, the only valid chronology for the composition of Dio's Roman History is the low one: AD 212-221 for the researches, 222-234 for the writing.
