This contribution aims at examining the Greek sophists’ contribution to the prince’s public communications and at studying the role these individuals played in the definition and transmission of imperial virtues. Special attention is dedicated to the ab epistulis Graecis and to the services offered by these learned men to the Roman Emperor. Finally, the author discusses the quality of σαφήνεια - clarity - and its new importance amongst the virtues an emperor must possess when he is writing laws.
