This paper focuses on some case studies relating to the production of Latin fake inscriptions in the centers of the Regio VII Etruria (CIL XI). In the first part, epigraphic forgeries produced predominantly ‘on paper’ by Pirro Ligorio and Annius of Viterbo, especially in Luna (Luni, La Spezia), are considered. Then the authors examine the activities of Domenico Mazzocchi and Lorenzo Cantini, which aimed respectively at dignifying either the origins of their hometown (Civita Castellana), or the ancestries of family members of their patrons in Florence through the publication of tampered Latin genuine inscriptions and fake inscriptions.
