This essay analyzes Ludwig von Mises and Wilhelm Röpke’s ideas on international order. The author reconstructs their positions on the role of international institutions, nation states, and federalism with regard to the problem of world peace and economic development. Both authors consider the free circulation of people and goods on a planetary level as the prerequisite for world peace. Both believe that it can only be achieved when free market ideas prevail among peoples and nations. The essay examines the similarities and differences between these two authors, and from the analysis carried out will be clear how the (neo)liberal order which eventually emerged was not in fact consistent with their original vision.
