The Contribution of Fenelon’s Aventures de Télemaque to the Aventures in Latin

Summary. § 1 summarizes the numerous Latin translations of Fenelon’s Aventures de Télémaque, subdividing them mainly according to categories that take into account first of all the distinction between partial (1.1) and integral (1.2) translations, as well as a translation that cannot fit into either of the two previous categories (1.3). In § 2 an attempt is made to identify the purposes of the Latin translations by first investigating the most recent translations (2.1), for which a priority language-teaching purpose is recognized. Then the aims of the most ancient Latin translations (2.2) are investigated, trying to demonstrate that they could not have had a popularizing intent (2.2.1); it is emphasized that they were published long after the translations into modern languages and an attempt is made to discover the reasons for this delay (2.2.2) assuming that in fact, contrary to what might have been expected, the publication of the oldest Latin translations must be considered a consequence and not a cause of the success of the Télémaque (2.2.3). In conclusion (§3) it is observed that the Latin translations of the Télémaque, which from the beginning have a marked glottodidactic interest, anticipate the analogous purposes that the translations of the Télémaque into modern languages will have in the nineteenth century and therefore paradoxically present themselves as a pioneering reactionary operation.

Riassunto. Nel § 1 si riepilogano le numerose e varie traduzioni latine delle Aventures de Télémaque, il romanzo francese di Fénelon uscito nel 1699, suddivinendole principalmente secondo categorie che tengano conto innanzitutto della distinzione tra traduzioni parziali (1.1) e integrali (1.2), a cui si aggiunge una traduzione che non può rientrare in nessuna delle due categorie precedenti (1.3). Nel § 2 si cerca di individuare gli scopi delle traduzioni latine indagando prima quelli delle traduzioni più recenti (2.1), per le quali si riconosce una prioritaria finalità glottodidattica. In seguito si indagano le finalità delle traduzioni latine più antiche (2.2) cercando di dimostrare che esse non potevano avere intento divulgativo (2.2.1); si sottolinea come esse vennero pubblicate molto tempo dopo le traduzioni in lingue moderne e si cerca di individuare le ragioni di questo ritardo (2.2.2) ipotizzando che in realtà, contrariamente a quanto ci si potesse attendere, la pubblicazione delle traduzioni latine più antiche deve essere considerata una conseguenza e non una causa della fortuna del Télémaque (2.2.3). In conclusione (§3) si osserva che le traduzioni latine del Télémaque, che fin dall’inizio presentano uno spiccato interesse glottodidattico, anticipano le analoghe finalità che le traduzioni del Télémaque in lingue moderne avranno nel XIX secolo e si configurano quindi, paradossalmente, come unaoperazione reazionaria all’avanguardia.
