Composizione 'in progress' della Commedia e rapporto con le fonti: il caso rivelatore di Stazio

Is the Comedy a work in progress? Some hints from Dante’s Classical sources: the telltale case of Statius. In this paper, I briefly analyze the reception of the Latin poet Statius in Dante’s work, and observe that it goes through different stages. In particular, I contrast Dante’s use of Statius in the so-called ‘alto Inferno’ and ‘basso Inferno’: while the first does not virtually show any Statian influence, the second features references to both the Achilleid and the Thebaid, with the latter progressively assuming a key structural role. This major development in Dante’s use of an epic canonic poet leads me to suggest that his culture and poetics face substantial changes in the course of the first cantica, thus corroborating the hypothesis that Dante started to work at the Inferno in Florence, before his exile.

In questo contributo, si esamina in modo sintetico la ricezione di Stazio nell’opera dantesca, distinguendo le fasi attraverso cui avviene l’appropriazione dell’autore antico. Viene sottolineata anche la contrapposizione tra l’alto Inferno, dove la presenza di Stazio come modello è virtualmente nulla, e il basso Inferno, dove sono riprese sia l’Achilleide che la Tebaide, con quest’ultima che assume un importante ruolo strutturale. Questo sviluppo impone di ipotizzare che la cultura e la poetica dantesca subiscano una notevole evoluzione dall’inizio della cantica, e ciò potrebbe essere compatibile con la teoria che Dante abbia cominciato a scrivere il poema a Firenze, prima dell’esilio.
