Based on recent critical insights into the work’s editorial history, this paper explores the ambiguous status of the ending of La cognizione del dolore by Carlo Emilio Gadda. The investigation aims to prove the existence of substantial reasons behind the author’s choice to publish the novel without the original conclusion involving the crime. On the basis of this specific authorial intention, which cannot be merely reduced to autobiographical concerns, this essay aims to motivate the different degrees of incompleteness that the work goes through in the course of its complex publishing history.
A partire dalle recenti acquisizioni critiche sulla storia redazionale dell’opera, il saggio si interroga sullo statuto ambiguo del finale della Cognizione del dolore di Carlo Emilio Gadda. L’indagine intende dimostrare l’esistenza di ragioni sostanziali alla base della scelta dell’autore di pubblicare il romanzo privo della conclusione originaria che prevedeva il delitto. Sulla base di questa specifica progettualità autoriale, non riducibile alle sole remore autobiografiche, il saggio si propone di motivare i diversi gradi di incompiutezza che l’opera attraversa nel corso della sua complessa vicenda editoriale.
