The intent of this work is to reconstruct the relationship between the Russian historian Mikhail Rostovtzeff (1870-1952) and the Italian intellectuals of the first half of the twentieth century. The correspondence with Gaetano De Sanctis and the exchange of letters with Ernesto Codignola and Giovanni Sanna, conserved in the archive of the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, will allow us, in particular, to retrace the complex work of translating and revising the Italian edition of his “Social and Economic History of the Roman Empire” which will be published by the Florentine publishing house “La Nuova Italia”, in 1933.
