Abstract

Carbon monoxide and isocyanides are universal ligands in organotransition metal chemistry, however the peculiar d5 electron configuration of group 5 metals has rendered the synthesis and the isolation of neutral homoleptic compounds a challenging story, which will be resumed including the most recent findings. Then the synthesis, the reactivity and the properties of mixed compounds with either carbonyl or isocyanide ligands will be described, highlighting structural and spectroscopic aspects. An overview will be given of cyanide and alkynyl ligands in group 5 metal complexes, with a focus on the metal-bonding picture, and this presentation will be shortly extended to some common -acceptor nitrogen donor ligands.
