In this paper, we analyze the semantic and argumentative values of the denomination ‘patriote(s)’ in the discourse of the French far-right party Front National, which became Rassemblement National (2017), based on a corpus extracted from the presidential campaign of 2017. The use of this word is linked, on the one hand with the plurisemiotic construction of the ethos of a French patriot, shown by the leader Marine Le Pen, and on the other hand, with the occurrences of a word with a close meaning: ‘nationaux’. We try to show that the discursive and performative values of ‘patriotes’ and ‘nationaux’ serve to develop divisive arguments and, in fact, to induce hate speech.

Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the semantic and argumentative values of the denomination ‘patriote(s)’ in the discourse of the French far-right party Front National, which became Rassemblement National (2017), based on a corpus extracted from the presidential campaign of 2017. The use of this word is linked, on the one hand with the plurisemiotic construction of the ethos of a French patriot, shown by the leader Marine Le Pen, and on the other hand, with the occurrences of a word with a close meaning: ‘nationaux’. We try to show that the discursive and performative values of ‘patriotes’ and ‘nationaux’ serve to develop divisive arguments and, in fact, to induce hate speech.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
