Tissue Engineering (TE) is an interdisciplinary field which applies life science and engineering principles to develop artificial tissue and organ substitutes by using three main elements: scaffold, cells and signals. This approach could be useful in the orthopedic scenario, namely as bone TE (BTE), ligament TE (LTE) and Tendon TE (TTE). This chapter presents an overview of the biomaterials and cell sources which can be used for BTE, TTE and LTE, as well as the signals for guiding the differentiation. Technologies used for scaffold fabrication are also reported, with some of the emerging trends in the bioprinting field.

Abstract
Tissue Engineering (TE) is an interdisciplinary field which applies life science and engineering principles to develop artificial tissue and organ substitutes by using three main elements: scaffold, cells and signals. This approach could be useful in the orthopedic scenario, namely as bone TE (BTE), ligament TE (LTE) and Tendon TE (TTE). This chapter presents an overview of the biomaterials and cell sources which can be used for BTE, TTE and LTE, as well as the signals for guiding the differentiation. Technologies used for scaffold fabrication are also reported, with some of the emerging trends in the bioprinting field.File in questo prodotto:
