The affluence of meanings and associations related to organic farming has long been the subject of dilemmas and still open controversies since the founding of the organic movement. Through a portrait bearing witness to the epistemic and normative mechanisms that influence and mould organic practices in present-day knowledge-based societies, this book charts the map of policy discourses, scientific disputes, legal instruments and ethical beliefs through which governments and agencies positioned organics within the EU and US regulatory frameworks. The analysis shows, ultimately, how the identity of organics condenses themes at the crossroads of compelling imaginaries and actual transformations, supporting farmers’ traditional knowledge, while driving agricultural processes towards more sustainable patterns of technoscientific innovation.
