A methodology matrix for integrated exploitation of archaeological sites: the experience of Meleager house in Pompeii

The contribution arises from research experience we are carrying out in one of the most famous and significant archeological site of the world: the Pompeii site. The research (its acronym is FARO) is referring to the “Accessible archeology: strategies for a widened use of the sites of cultural interest” and it has the aim to analyse, in particular, the via di Mercurio and its domus and also to deepen the experimentation of methodological models for defining solutions and consequently to carry out appropriate interventions. The applied research that has been developed for the Domus of Meleager is based on the consideration of the different aspects in a multidisciplinary perspective. First, the morphological critical points and the conditions of conservation of the old material are been detected. Then, the recognition of the more interesting and possible paths of the tour inside the domus has been done. The integration of these different parameters has allowed us to identify solutions and, then, specific interventions that have been verified in connection to specific situations. The research shows us the strong inter-relationship between the conservative conditions and the ones linked to the use and fruition. But especially, it is primarily significant the integration of scientific knowledge and the current instances of the project that is linked very strongly to the actions of recognition, perception and interpretation of the site and its values.

Il contributo nasce da un’esperienza che si sta effettuando sul campo di uno dei siti archeologici più complessi e significativi al mondo: quello della città di Pompei. Sviluppato a partire da una ricerca FARO dell’Università di Napoli riguardante il tema “Archeologia accessibile: strategie per la fruizione ampliata dei siti di interesse culturale”, lo studio ha affrontato nello specifico l’area della via di Mercurio, approfondendo altresì la sperimentazione di modelli metodologici alla base della ricerca di soluzioni e dell’individuazione di interventi. La multidisciplinarità degli aspetti, infatti, rappresenta solo il dato da cui partire, mentre si avverte sempre più l’esigenza di una integrazione degli strumenti conoscitivi e d’indagine e di quelli di progetto inteso quale elemento di controllo e gestione del reale stratificato in relazione ai bisogni contemporanei. Nel caso di un sito archeologico emerge, dunque, in maniera significativa la interconnessione degli aspetti conservativi e di quelli legati alla fruizione; mentre, nell’affrontare la multidimensionalità dei livelli di conoscenza si rende evidente la necessità della integrazione e della verifica delle soluzioni progettuali in stretta relazione con le criticità morfologiche e le condizioni di conservazione della materia antica, ma anche dei modelli interpretativi dei percorsi di fruizione da individuare sulla scorta dei rapporti con un livello, a sua volta, non ristretto alla specificità del caso preso in esame, bensì alle caratteristiche autentiche del sito.
