The contribution deals with the theme of the comparison of iconographic sources and stratifications of the Girifalco Fortress. The medieval Girifalco Fortress was built by Arezzo in 1258 on pre-existing early medieval buildings. An idea of what the Girifalco fortress could look like in the last historical phase can be taken from the fresco by the school of Luca Signorelli, dated 1510-1515. The construction of the sixteenth-century fortress is the work of the military engineer from Milan Gabrio Serbelloni flanked by the Francesco Laparelli from Cortona. The iconographic sources are rare. Even European travelers who visit Cortona at the beginning of the twentieth century cannot help but grasp the regimented charm of art and history expressed by that city: a charm that comes from urban topography, the architectural structure of the city, the exceptional amount of churches and museums.
